So, I have just returned from a vacation, and one of the reoccurring themes was coffee…
Alot of coffee…
In all seriousness, buying coffee from a Dunkin’ Donuts or a Starbucks is pretty expensive. When I am at home I always drink my coffee from my trusty ole’ Keurig. But my trip got me thinking….how much money am I saving by drinking my coffee from a Keurig?
I typically drink the “Dark Magic” Green Valley coffee (found here). Buying a 96 pod box comes out to be about $0.50 for one pod. I go through 2 pods a day (because I need a lot of “dark magic” in my life), so that looks like $1.00 a day (I drink it straight black, with some ice…no creamer added). So, assuming I drink coffee 300 days out of the year, that’s right at $300 a year (ouch).
But, If I buy my coffee from Starbucks or Dunkin’ I don’t just get strong dark coffee…I get the a “tall white mocha” (or something like that…my wife speaks barista and I don’t). While I don’t speak barista, I do speak money, and I know that if I buy one it is right at $4.00. The “dark art” of math tells me that over the same 300 days a year timeframe, that I would spend close to $1200 a year on coffee (major OUCH!!). Even if I just got regular coffee, after tax that is almost $2.00, or close to $600 a year.

I know what you are thinking. “That’s a $900 a year savings, but you could save even more by just brewing it in a coffee maker with coffee grounds!” Yes, yes I could, but I do enjoy the convenience factor, and I am willing to pay a little more for it.
All that to say, I might still treat myself with a tall white mocha every now and again, but I feel pretty good knowing that I can save upwards of $900 a year by just drinking my black Keurig coffee.
